From the alumni chapter board president

Dear Ole Miss Business School Alumni,

As president of the Alumni Chapter Board for the School of Business Administration, I am honored to address an open letter to you in the inaugural edition of the new Business First magazine. With roughly twenty five percent of the current Ole Miss student body enrolled in the Business School, there is no greater way to help Ole Miss than to support the business school.

Besides your hard-earned cash, which is always needed to help Ole Miss, I believe that the greatest way for you to give back to Ole Miss is to provide students with career advice and help students find internships. As many of you know, internships provide exposure for students, teach them about different industries and provide them with a more attractive resume for postgraduate employment. Speaking from personal experience, my internship provided me with the ability to discern between different career opportunities and made me aware of the skills that I needed to develop further to excel. This awareness influenced class selection criteria during my senior year and raised my interest in classroom discussions considerably.

How can you help students? The best first step is to look at the list of board representatives on Page 2 and contact the one in your area via e-mail. We are working to create an e-mail list that will allow board members to send student resumes and/or student questions about careers in your area to you. This nonintrusive method of communication will allow alumni to provide advice, share business contacts with an Ole Miss student or help place a student in a summer internship.

Our goal is to recruit some of the very top Ole Miss business school students to your area, so the quality of the resumes you will be receiving should be of interest to you. In addition, interns can provide quality work in an inexpensive manner for a variety of industries and are an excellent complement to your company’s traditional college recruiting programs. Last year, we placed three interns in Nashville through this method, and our goal is to grow those numbers in each area.

Thank you for helping the Ole Miss business school better prepare our students for the future by providing quality internships and career advice to our brightest students. If you have other ideas about how alumni can help our students with their career development, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Emmet Seibels (BBA 96)
