More than 85 faculty members and doctoral students from 10 universities across the Southeast visited the University of Mississippi in February for the fifth annual Southeast Marketing Doctoral Symposium.

Hosted by the Department of Marketing, the symposium attracted the largest number of attendees and schools in the event’s five-year history. The meeting brought together doctoral students, along with their faculty doctoral coordinators, to present research papers, allowing them to get feedback from other doctoral students who might be working in the same area and from faculty experts. The academic presentations were made in a friendly, relatively informal environment.

“The symposium provided a great chance to network with other Ph.D. students and professors from the Southern schools,” said Erin Gillespie, a second-year UM doctoral student. “Having the opportunity to present our research and receive constructive feedback in this setting gave us new insight into not only our current research project but also ideas for future directions of the project.” This year’s conference featured 19 paper presentations.

“Hosting the symposium really enhanced the image of the university among our peer institutions, and participants said they were impressed with Ole Miss and Oxford,” said Scott Vitell, Phil B. Hardin Professor of Marketing at UM.

Stephanie Noble, UM associate professor of marketing, presented “Surviving the Transition to Faculty Status and Developing a Research Pipeline,” which included tips on how to be successful as a marketing academic.

William O. Bearden, Bank of America chair and professor emeritus of marketing at the University of South Carolina, was honored at a luncheon for his continuing support of doctoral education in the marketing discipline and for mentoring doctoral students.

Besides Ole Miss, schools represented at the symposium included the universities of Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Memphis, South Carolina and Tennessee, Florida State University, Louisiana State University and Mississippi State University.
