Financial Skills for Non Financial Managers (Extended Version)

A three module seminar designed to enhance the understanding financial markets (what they are and the role they play); introduction to municipal bonds; structures, rating agencies, etc.; overview of FASB regulations; interpreting financial reports; conducting benefit/cost analysis; basic techniques in cash and capital budgeting; using financial information to make business decisions.

Who will benefit most from this seminar?

Employees who have been identified for promotion to managerial or supervisory positions through your corporate development program but have little or no financial training or back ground.

Newly promoted managers who have little or no financial and accounting training.

Session 1 (approximately 4 hours of instruction)

  3. Accrual versus cash basis accounting
  4. The accounting process – elements of financial reporting
  5. Financial statements – what they are and what they are not
  6. Cost behavior: fixed costs versus variable costs
  7. Cash budgeting (O & M) vs. capital budgeting
  8. Activity drivers

Session 2 (approximately 4 hours of instruction)

  1. Introduction to the time value of money
  2. Introduction to financial ratio analysis
  3. Financial ratio analysis – advanced concepts
  4. The income statement and balance sheet
  5. Internal control
  6. Time value of money – advanced concepts

Session 3 (approximately 4 hours of instruction)

  1. Capital budgeting tools
  2. Cost of capital
  3. Financial markets
  4. Municipal bonds, structures, and rating agencies
  5. Capital budgeting– advanced concepts
  6. Estimating project cash flows

Basic Financial Skills for Non Financial Managers (Abbreviated version)
