Career Outlook

Both corporations and individuals are increasingly concerned with protection against losses of property, life, health, and liability lawsuits. This trend has led to consistently growing career opportunities in insurance and corporate risk management. Today the insurance industry employs over two million people in the United States. While most of us know someone who sells insurance, we often don't realize that over 75 percent of insurance jobs are non-sales positions.

Some of the entry-level positions for which Ole Miss students are hired include claims adjuster, commercial lines underwriter, financial consultant, independent insurance broker, loss control representative, and risk analyst. The insurance and risk management faculty are absolutely dedicated to maximizing student interaction with people employed in the insurance industry so that students can find their own niche. Specifically, we use a faculty-student team approach, primarily through out the Insurance and Risk Management Society, to develop joint activities with the industry.

For example, we host an annual Insurance Careers Day on campus so that students can discuss careers with a wide variety of insurance representatives and seniors can begin their job campaigns. Some of the companies and associations that attended a recent Insurance Careers Day include
All Risks, Inc., AmWins Group, State Farm, Willis, and Zurich, among others.
