Student
Support
At Ole Miss, the efforts of our insurance and risk
management students are supported in a number of ways. In recent years our
substantial scholarship endowment has allowed us to distribute merit-based
scholarships totaling over $20,000 annually to students majoring in insurance.
Our students also frequently receive scholarships from state and regional
organizations based on the recommendations of faculty. Financial support is also
available to students working toward professional designations, such as the
Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter or the Chartered Life Underwriter.
Each year, a number of major industry events are held both
on- and off-campus. Students are always invited to attend free of charge.
Insurance and risk management students also are supported in their job search. A
book of Ole Miss student resumes is sent to prospective employers each year,
lists of key employer contacts are provided, and faculty often counsel students
about job opportunities.
Internships
The Ole Miss faculty actively works to find
students summer internships in insurance and risk management. Student
internships are encouraged because they give students insight into which career
path is right for them. They also serve as a very valuable asset when the
student enters the market for a permanent position. Students essentially can
kill two birds with one stone, because they benefit from both summer income and
the opportunity to earn up to 6 hours towards the Insurance and Risk Management
major.
Educational
Preparation
To begin preparation for a major in insurance and risk
management at Ole Miss, a well planned high school or community college program
will be necessary. A broad background in English, mathematics, and computer
usage will allow the student to take full advantage of the educational
opportunities and information technology available in the School of Business
Administration. In addition the student should take high school courses in
accounting and economics if they are available.
